●Manga fans respect him like a “god.” He has many works, but there is one theme that he always follows: “The wonder of life.”
At the age of 20, Osamu Tezuka published his first manga, “Shin Takarajima” (New Treasure Island), and over the next 34 years, he created an enormous number of popular manga. His energy alone is almost “superhuman,” and with all of his works being so wonderful, it is no wonder that he is revered as a “god” by so many fans of his art.
“Unico,” based on Tezuka’s wonderful original story, was a refreshingly moving experience for all who saw it. Did you feel your heart washed clean? In our daily lives, we are burdened with many things, such as worries, suffering, and desires, and this gives us the courage to overcome them. Isn’t this a common theme in all of Tezuka’s manga? Sometimes they remind us of forgotten dreams, and other times they remind us of the importance of life.
This is probably because the themes that support Tezuka’s manga are wonderful. “In all of his works, what Tezuka wants to convey the most to his readers… It is, in Tezuka’s own words, ‘the wonder of life.'” To “live” is not to just “live and be well” but to “live” actively on your own terms. And to “live,” there must be something one needs. In each of his works, Tezuka shows us what that is.
Of course, “Unico” also taught us. Love is necessary to survive…
●Tezuka says that it was at a studio in Hollywood, U.S.A., that the idea for “UNICO “Unico” came to his mind.
As you may recall, Unico first appeared in the world of past issues of “Lyrica,” a girls’ magazine published by Sanrio. When the decision was made to publish “Lyrica,” the editor-in-chief and Mr. Tezuka had many discussions about the manga to be published in the magazine. “Lyrica” contained several manga based on Greek mythology, and Mr. Tezuka valued this image and was considering the creation of a Greek mythology character. Finally, Unico’s design came to him when he went to a Hollywood studio to observe the production of “Orpheus of the Stars,” a film that preceded the Sanrio movie. As soon as the idea occurred to him, he immediately drew it up and “Unico” was born on the spot. This means that Unico was born in the U.S.A.

●漫画ファンからは「神」のように尊敬される存在。 たくさんの作品があるけど、つねに追いつづけるテー マはひとつ “生きることのすばらしさ。
手塚治虫さんは20才の時、はじめて「新宝島」 まんがという漫画を発表され、以後34年間、ぼう大なつく数にのぼる人気漫画を創りだされました。 そのちょうじんできエネルギーだけでも 「超人的」といっていいほ どですが、その上に、どの作品をとってみても、 すばらしいものばかりなのですから、多くの漫そんけい 画ファンから「神」のように尊敬されているのもむりのない話です。
さて、その手塚さんのかかれた、すばらしい 原作をもとにつくられた 「ユニコ」 ですが、やはり、観た人すべてにさわやかな感動をあたえ あらずにおきませんでした。 心の中をすっかり洗い流された気持ち、というのでしょうか? 毎日ながの生活の中でわたしたちは悩みだとか、苦しみよくぼうだとか、欲望だとか、 いろいろなものをかかえているわけですが、それをのりこえてゆく勇気をあたえてくれます。 これは手塚さんの漫画の きょうつうすべてに共通している点ではないでしょうか? あるときは忘れかけていた夢をおもいださせてくれたり、生命の大切さをおしえてくれたりします。
それは、けっきょく手塚さんの漫画をささえているテーマがすばらしいものだからでしょう。 「あらゆる作品の中で手塚さんが読む人にもっとも伝えたいこと ･･････。 それは手塚さんご自身の 言葉によれば「生きることのすばらしさ」です。 「生きる」というのは、ただなんとなく 「生きて せつきよくてき いる」のではなく、自分から積極的に「生きる」 ことです。そして、「生きる」ためには何かが必要なのです。 手塚さんは一つ一つの作品の中で、 それが何なのかおしえてくれます。
もちろん「ユニコ」 もわたしたちにおしえてくれました。 生きるためには愛が必要なのだと･･････。
●ユニコが手塚さんの頭 にひらめいたのは、アメリ カのハリウッドのスタジオ だそうです。
ごぞんじのとおり、ユニコがこの世にはじめて登場したのは、過去サンリオから出版された少女雑誌「リリカ」の誌上です。 「リリカ」を発へんしゅうちょう刊するのがきまったとき、 編集長と手塚さんは連載マンガについて、何度も話合いを行いまししんわ た。 「リリカ」 にはギリシャ神話をモチけいさいーフにしたマンガがいくつも掲載されましたが、 手塚さんもそのイメージを大切にしてくだ さり、ギリシャ神話のキャラクターけんとうを検討されさいました。 最終的にユニコが思いうかんだのは、サンリオ映 画の前の作品 「星のオルフ せいさく ェウス」の製作を見学にハリ ウッドのスタジオへ行ったときだそうです。思いうかぶとすぐに描き上げ、その場で「ユニコ」は産み出されました。 ということは、ユニコはアメリカ生まれというわ･･････。
